Gankaiji Temple

This temple is historic in that it is the family temple of famed church architect Yosuke Tetsukawa. The gate was reconstructed by him in 1924, commissioned by the head priest at the time. Very few temples have gates constructed from brick.
Having become renowned as “the father of church architecture”, many repeatedly urged Tetsukawa to renounce his beliefs and become a Christian. However, he remained loyal to his faith as a Jodo-Shinshu Buddhist, worshipping at this temple until his death.
