Mt. Sanno observatory

  • 404views

From the observatory deck, the East China Sea and the Wakamatsu Strait can be seen on the west side, and Sanohara Village and Yaguradake (where Marine Pier Observation deck is located) on the east side. Mount Sanno stands 440 meters above sea level, offering a full panorama view of nearly the entirety of the Nakadori and Wakamatsu Islands.
Thanks to the Goto Island’s location between mainland Japan, Korea, and China, it was an important location for ports of call during the Japanese envoys to Tang China. In fact, it’s said that Saicho, a prestigious Buddhist missionary, boarded the envoys and passed these very islands on his way to study Buddhism on Tiantai Mountain. As thanks for ensuring his safe voyage, it’s said that Saicho transferred a piece of Enryakuji’s tutelary deity, Sanno, to this location.
