Step into a world of light, reflection, and tradition at a little-known countryside celebration that feels both timeless and intimate.

Each year in early June, over 5,000 flickering candles illuminate the terraced rice fields of Hasami Town, marking the start of the rice-planting season. Take a peaceful evening stroll along a 1.5 km (~1 mile) path, hang a wish on a colourful tanzaku wish paper, listen to the gentle chorus of frogs, and enjoy complimentary Hasami tea offered by local hosts.

This is a small, community-organised event focused on the beauty of the rice terraces and the warmth of local hospitality. Rather than a bustling festival atmosphere, the evening invites visitors to slow down and soak in the gentle glow of thousands of candles reflected across the water-filled fields.

Accompanied by the gentle patter of rain and the sounds of the countryside, a local musical group will perform at the tea station throughout the evening. In 2026, nearby Kiyoto Terrace will also open its doors to visitors for a special record-listening event. Guests are welcome to bring along their favourite records from home or enjoy selections from Kiyoto Terrace's own collection, played on a vintage record player generously donated by the museum Onyoku Hakubutsukan (Sound Museum) in Saikai.

Arrive a little before 6:00 PM to catch the changing light as sunset gives way to dusk. Parking is free, and attendants will be on hand to help direct visitors to the designated parking areas.

Please note: This event takes place at the start of tsuyu (梅雨), Japan's rainy season. We recommend bringing an umbrella or rain jacket and wearing shoes suitable for wet or muddy ground.

The rice terraces are set on a hillside, so visitors can expect some gentle uphill and downhill walking throughout the evening.

The event will be postponed until the following day in the event of strong winds or heavy rain.
