A Sweet Little Detour in Hasami Town
Step into the whimsical and creative world of the Fake Food Hasami workshop (食品サンプルの日本美術) and you'll be greeted by a creamy ice-cream that never melts, a gravity-defying tower of spaghetti, and a bowl of steaming ramen that never goes cold.
Tucked away on a quiet backstreet in the charming northern Nagasaki ceramics hub Hasami, you'll discover the fascinating world of Shokuhin Sanpuru (食品サンプル). These hyper-realistic 3D food models are used in restaurant displays all across Japan. From cozy department store cafes to nostalgic neighborhood noodle shops, "fake foods" are a beloved part of everyday life in Japan. What most visitors don't realize is that each meal is actually a carefully handcrafted piece of art made by skilled artisans using techniques passed down through generations.
At this workshop, it's your turn to roll up your sleeves and step into their shoes!
< What to Expect >
🎨Design Your Mini Plate
Choose your miniature plate and handpick up to five ingredients to build your perfect pint-sized meal. Want more options? Add extra ingredients for ¥100 each. You'll start by arranging a sample layout, then move to the real plate where you'll glue each piece into place. It's fun, creative, and surprisingly relaxing.
🖐️Craft with Expert Guidance
Mr. Noda will guide you through the process by slicing up ingredients and showing you how to pipe whipped cream and drizzle sauce just right. And don't worry - you'll get to practice on paper before you tackle the real deal!
🎁Take Home a Handmade Memento
By the end of the session, you'll have your very own personalized mini fake food plate - an adorable and completely unique souvenir from your time in Japan.
After the 24-hour drying period, many guests get even craftier and turn theirs into fridge magnets, brooches, or hair clips using hot glue. Whatever you choose to do with your plate, it's sure to be a fun conversation starter!
🍜More Ways to Get Creative
Fake Food Hasami can accommodate up to 8 participants by splitting into two groups of 4 and rotating between workshops. In addition to the mini plate workshop, they also offer a mini parfait workshop, where you can create the ultimate ice cream sundae, and a wax tempura workshop, which gives you a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how food replicas used to be made.
