Hasami Porcelain Festival (はさみとうきまつり)

A Golden Week Tradition in Hasami Town, Nagasaki for Over 60 Years

What is the Hasami Porcelain Festival?
The Hasami Porcelain Festival is a week-long event held during Golden Week that draws pottery enthusiasts from across Japan and around the world. It is one of Nagasaki Prefecture’s largest annual events, with around 150 local kilns and producers offering a wide variety of Hasami ware, some at special festival prices.

In addition to tableware, there's also plenty of delcicous festival food on offer, including food stalls, food trucks, and festival-only offerings from local cafes and restaurants.

What makes Hasami ware special?
Hasami ware refers to all ceramics produced in Hasami Town and is known for its diversity rather than a single defining style. With a history of over 400 years, Hasami developed as a center for practical porcelain production. A long-standing division of labor system has enabled makers to produce high-quality porcelain consistently and in large quantities, making it widely known as durable, affordable tableware for everyday use.

Makers today introduce new designs each year in response to changing preferences and trends. As a result, Hasami ware ranges from traditional blue-and-white patterns to minimalist designs, modern colors, traditional designs painted on modern shapes, and functional, stackable forms suited to contemporary living.

Production methods are equally varied, from hand-crafted and hand-painted pieces to items made using molds and modern manufacturing techniques. While some earthenware is also produced, Hasami is best known for its porcelain, valued for its strength, smooth texture, and ease of use in daily life.

Whether you are looking for a new favorite mug, a dining set, or a piece that reflects your personal style, the Hasami Porcelain Festival is an ideal place to discover the charm of Hasami ware.
